Working in Singapore, After a Year
One year and three months back, I made a not-according-to-plan decision. Moving to Singapore. It was some kind of good and bad decision. Anyway, everything always have these two sides of coin, right?
Well, most of my time spent here is for working If you are wondering how working in Singapore does look like, in perspective of Indonesian workers, here are some that I have in mind now.
Diverse Culture - You will find Chinese, Indian, Pilipino, Malays, and of course Caucasian. All of them will have different accent, approach, ways of working, everything! It is difficult and also challenging. If you came from the same culture, at least from the way you speak, you can identify what is the meaning. But here, you have to understand many different ways of saying things and approaching everything to work.
Better Work Life Balance – It is true. Not that here people doesn’t work hard, but you will find more time saving because of the transportation service and people here are work more effectively.
The Feel of Rushing - Less time due to work and life balance but more demand on delivering. You know the result, right? Time flows pretty fast here. The days passed very quick and suddenly you feel yourself haven’t done much for today. Later on, what we might learn from is how to make use of time better than before. And one more to add.. your life somehow feels like always spent running and chasing. Chasing the MRT door before it is getting closed is one of the example.
Bigger Opportunities - So you will found much more wide range of opportunities here. Although the country is small, many big companies are setting their head office here. And you always have the opportunity to build a new one. There are a lot of funding available here.
Tax? - This one is surprising, you will pay only a year and the amount is nothing compared to the one that you have in Indonesia, well, if you are paying it.
Robotic + Boring? - Wake up, go to office, lunch, continue to work, go home, take a sleep, wake up, go to office, lunch, continue to work, go home, take a sleep, wake up, go to office, … (repeat until Saturday) , weekend, don’t know what to do since everywhere interesting has been visited (and actually not really that interesting), go to sleep, wake up, go to office, and so on. The bottom line is, everything is managed very well, so you will hardly find something surprising.
I want to write much more but it seems like I am not doing my time effectively (see?). I think it is best to close it now.
So, are you interested to come in?

Yeah, I’m surprised too that you decided to go work in Singapore rather that other thing we’ve heard about.
So, any short term planning to continue school abroad? (wake-up call)
Haha actually I got both. I already continued my study, getting my master degree here on part time. Not bad right?
